An API Key is a unique string of characters used as your credentials to identify and authenticate your access to the Mailjet API, much like a username. To access the Mailjet API, you will authenticate using your API Key and Secret key, much like you would use a username and password to access your account through the website.
Key details about your API and Secret Keys
-
API Key visibility:
- Your API Key is always accessible in the Mailjet app. You can view and manage it at any time through the API Key Management page
-
Secret Key visibility:
- Your Secret Key is displayed only once upon creation to ensure maximum security.
- Save your Secret Key in a secure location for future use.
-
Resetting the Secret Key:
- From the API Key Management page you can reset your API Secret Key but selecting the gear icon next to the API key, and selecting "Reset Secret Key"
- As a best practice, it is recommended the Secret key be reset once every 90 days to maintain optimal account security.
-
SMTP integration:
- The API Key and Secret Key are required to configure SMTP parameters for sending emails directly from your email client or program.
Protecting your API Key and Secret Key is essential to prevent unauthorized access to your Mailjet API connection and ensure the security of your account. If you suspect your credentials have been compromised, reset your Secret Key immediately.
Resetting your Secret Key requires updating the authentication for all active API connections.
Additional functionality with API Keys
API Keys enable the creation of subaccounts within your Mailjet account. A subaccount is an account nested under your primary Mailjet account, identified by a different API key.
Creating subaccounts allows you to:
- Separate mailings across different API Keys.
-
Simplify account sharing and reporting.
To create additional subaccounts:
- Navigate to the API Key Management and click 'Create subaccount'
- If your plan allows for more than one subaccount, you will need to contact support to request additional subaccounts.
- For additional information, read our Subaccounts FAQ.
- Navigate to the API Key Management and click 'Create subaccount'
